Creative Metronomes: Digital Audio Workstations in the Private Studio and Orchestra Classroom

Wednesday, September 28, 2022
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

The words “digital audio workstation” – often shortened to DAW – might sound intimidating to the less technologically-inclined, but it doesn’t have to be! In this session, learn how Digital Audio Workstations can enrich and enhance your teaching practice in either the orchestra classroom or strings private studio for any style of music you might teach. No prior experience is needed, and you only need a computer to get started!

Patti Kilroy
California State University, Los Angeles

Violinist, pedagogue, and recording artist Patti Kilroy is a uniquely modern-minded musician, most known for giving the world-premiere to over 100 musical works. She has shared the stage with artists including Björk, Deep Purple, Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, John Cale from the Velvet Underground, and Afro-Peruvian singer Eva Ayllón. Praised for her “intensely focused” playing by The New York Times, she uses both her extensive performance résumé and experience with new music as tools in her work. As an educator, she strives to develop inclusive curricula that honor each student's unique experiences and interests, in both one-on-one and classroom settings.
Kilroy has given numerous presentations across the United States on her research, speaking on topics ranging from jobs in academia to phasing and looping to performing with pre-recorded media. Her dissertation research focuses on developing terminology and frameworks to describe new performance practices in music with live processing electronics. To learn more, visit
